Happy New Year and Blue Moon!

Tags: Astronomy
Happy New Year everyone! This year's New Year Eve just happens to coincide with a blue moon. That happens only once every 21 years, so I heard on the radio yesterday. If that's true, the next New Year's Blue Moon will occur in 2030 - I'll be 79. I think I'll make a point of looking for it tonight.

A blue moon is a full moon that occurs twice in one month. Here are a few excerpts from earthsky.org: On this last night of the year, nearly everyone worldwide will see the full moon all night long. The full moon will rise around sunset on this New Year’s Eve, climb highest in the sky around midnight, and will set around sunrise on the first day of 2010. This is the second full moon in December for the Americas, Europe, Africa, and far-western Asia. Tonight’s full moon is also the closest full moon to the December 21 solstice. In the northern hemisphere, where it’s winter, tonight’s full moon is often called the Long Night Moon.

Here are the lyrics to the memorable song that was inspired by this astronomical event, hum along with me:

Blue Moon, you saw me standing alone

Without a dream in my heart

Without a love of my own

Blue Moon, you knew just what I was there for

You heard me saying a prayer for

Someone I really could care for

And then there suddenly appeared before me

The only one my arms will ever hold

I heard somebody whisper, "Please adore me"

And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold

Blue Moon, now I'm no longer alone

Without a dream in my heart

Without a love of my own
