Happy (U.S.) Thanksgiving!

Tags: Food & Fun
Today is U.S. Thanksgiving and everyone is home cooking up a feast for family and friends and what is known as "orphans" in the states. We have a tradition of taking in people who don't have family nearby to share a meal with on this day. No one should ever go without or be alone on this particular holiday, even if it is a very family-centric day. Everyone is family on Thanksgiving, like everyone is Irish on St.Patrick's Day.

This particular holiday is a much bigger deal in the states than it is in Canada. I suspect that's because of the weather and the time of year, it's colder and people are less likely to want to spend time outdoors. That brings everyone together for a feast indoors. Usually there is turkey with all the sides - potatoes, stuffing, sweet potatoes, green beans, cranberries - but you will also see family traditions that include roast beef, fish, macaroni and cheese, stewed greens with pork, sauerkraut, apple pie, pumpkin pie, layer cakes and whatever your family makes at festive meals. On this day many families like to make mention of what they have to be thankful for. What would you mention? I am thankful for all the people around me, near and far, who do so much to make my life good in so many ways. Big, thankful hugs to all of you!

If I could wish for one thing this year, it would be for this miserable cold to depart from my body once and for all. That would make me thankful. I am now into week 3 with this silly cold and cold medicine liquid has now become one of my major food groups. I may have to go to a detox clinic, like Amy Winehouse, to get off the stuff once the cold finally goes away.
