Beer & Dogs Party at Rob & Louise's!

Tags: Being Neighborly Food & Entertainment Fun Life Local News
Rob has asked me to share this invitation with you. On Saturday, July 10th, Louise and Rob Woodley will be holding an informal ‘beer and dogs’ do at their new home. They would like very much if you would come and join them and celebrate their moving out of the garage and into a real house.

The party will begin at 3pm and will go until whenever it ends.

They will be supplying the beer and dogs. If you want to bring more beer, or stuff to go with dogs, then feel free – but it’s really not necessary just as long as you bring yourselves (and anyone else you think we know, but whose email address we don’t have!) Musicians – a chance for a jam might present itself. Stranger things have happened.

We’re looking forward to seeing Rob, meeting Louise and seeing them in their new home in West Bay Marshes. See you there!

What A Party! Happy Birthday, Dave!

Tags: Life on Marble Mountain
Approximately 60 people helped Dave celebrate another year of life in beautiful Marble Mountain paradise. If anybody arrived hungry or thirsty, they didn't leave that way. There was plenty of everything, even vegetarian, though nothing for vegans as most every dish had cheese of some sort. There was commercial wine, home made wine, beer, coolers and Marble Mountain elixir, the best drink in the world, cold & refreshing straight out of the mountain.

At some time around 10 or 11 the dancing started, kicked of by the insistence of Jean and Irene, who happily pulled in nearly everyone else. As we all danced, those who knew the words sang loudly, those who didn't know the words mumbled loudly. For some reason, this worked. This went on, along with profuse storytelling, until we left shortly before 1:00 a.m. What does it mean when you wake up the next morning singing the song you danced to the night before?

Today is Dave Dauphinee's birthday, July 7 is Dave MacDonald's birthday. Just wanted to clear that up.

At approximately this time every year, we find a stunning Luna Moth attched to some part of our homestead, usually the wall of the shed. The watch is on. Keep tuned for developments.

It's a crisis! Alert!! Alert!! Intruders in the coop house!!!!!!!!!!!! Cluck-cluck-Cluck-cluck-Cluck-cluck-BWAAAK!

The hens are having a BIG crisis - this morning we introduced the black bantam peeps to the older hens, which are twice the size of the peeps.

The peeps are happily standing in their new digs but the older, bigger Golden Comet hens are aghast at the intruders in their house. One by one they trot up the ramp, peer in the door to their house, make very concerned noises, then trot back down to the run. They don't know what to do about the interlopers in their house.

An intrepid hen, one who no doubt must need to lay an egg, has found the courage to go in the house and into the laying box. She is in there making a ruckus and hasn't hunkered down yet to make her deposit. Poor things have no courage. This is also the first rooster they have ever seen.

The queen hen has been trotting around the run and up & down the ramp with her neck & tail feathers in a ruff but she has no idea what to do. Golden Comet chickens are known to be particularly docile. Bantams are know to be particularly tough. It's a stand-off!

Did I ever mention that my chickens are chicken? Everything frightens them. When they are scared they run for the safety of their house but not this time, that's where the scary things are.

My little, pint-size rooster is crowing his little heart out!

Tags: Entertainment News In Marble Mountain
My little, black rooster is growing up and he is feeling quite the big guy. He lets it out with full-hearted crows! He does crow, after crow, after crow, standing tall with his neck arched to let out the full-bodied sound. He has been doing this every morning for the last few days.

At first he was shy and wouldn't do it if he knew we were watching but now he's proud of himself and he lets it fly. This goes on for a few hours immediately following sunrise. As the sun rises higher in the sky, eventually he will settle down to keeping his lovely hen company. Then he will snuggle up next to her, with his little hen tucked into a corner, him on the outside as her protector.

He doesn't have a name yet. What would be a good name for him?

What a fabulous time we all had at the St. George's Channel Hall with entertainment provided by Rob Woodley, Pat Lamey, Heather Richards, Tim Laborie and Adam Cook and friends.

The music started at 7:30, with a full house and then some, and played until 10:00 with only a break for sandwiches, sweets and tea at 8:30. It was a blast and I am sure that everyone had a great time.

What a great bunch of people they are at St. George's Channel! They managed to raise approximately $1,137.00 for our new hall fund. Thank you all for your wonderful and much appreciated support. You rock! We couldn't ask for better neighbors.

Geologic Factoids of North Mountain

Tags: North Mount Marble Mountain
North Mountain lies on the west side of Bras d'Or Lake between Denys Basin and West Bay. It is about 260 m high and is composed of Precambrian granitic and George River Group rocks. The latter originally contained limestone bands, which have been metamorphosed into marble. Some marble is still quarried at Marble Mountain.

The North Mountain block was outside the early Carboniferous basin where the Horton strata were deposited. Later on, during Windsor time, when the sea covered a wider area, the North Mountain block became an island against which Windsor Group strata accumulated. The block is now almost entirely surrounded by Windsor deposits, which are deeply eroded and give maximum relief on both the north and south sides. The scarp is steepest on the south side and forms cliffs along West Bay. The more gentle dip-slope reaches Denys Basin at a shallower angle. The block is crosscut by a fault, forming a narrow, steep-sided valley.

The valley is occupied by two streams, Kennedys Brook and MacIntyres Brook. Lakes, bogs, and wandering streams are found on the relatively flat crest of North Mountain, but once the marginal slopes are reached, the streams become straight and fast flowing.

North Mountain was well known for its Marble Mountain limestone quarry. The story of this limestone and marble quarry industry of the late 1800s and early 1900s is documented at the Marble Mountain Museum. After limestone was extracted from the quarry, it was crushed, slaked, and shipped to Prince Edward Island, where farmers used it to lime soils. Important Mi'kmaq burial sites are found in North Mountain cliffs bordering the Bras d'Or Lake.

We need your help recruiting. The Atlantic Path Assessment Centre in Halifax will close June 26th!

On June 26th the Assessment Centre at the West End Mall will close. As a final push to recruit participants in Halifax Regional Municipality we are asking you to lend a hand one more time. If each person that was through encouraged one friend, one family member, one co-worker or a neighbor to commit to participating in Atlantic Path, researchers would have all the samples and information they need to analyze Nova Scotians and make discoveries on how future generations can live healthier, more cancer free lives.

As Recruitment Manager for Atlantic Path, I am asking you to lend a hand one more time. Please make an effort to ask people to commit to a 2 hour appointment so they can make a difference. Besides receiving beneficial personal information such as blood pressure, body mass index and bone density results, they will also experience the feeling of being part of something much larger than them and know that their time may help save the life of their loved one in the future. They can register online at www.atlanticpath.ca or by calling 1-877-285-7284.

Again, thank you for lending a hand and toenails to the largest cancer research study in North America; but mostly, thank you for helping us become the leading recruitment region in this study across Canada. You have made a significant contribution.

Best regards,

Gail Adams, Recruitment Manager

Nightlife

Tags: Life on Marble Mountain
As we lay in bed at night, we get lulled to sleep with a cacophony of spring peepers for our lullaby. They sing all night long, except when something moving nearby frightens them into sudden silence. I wonder what is wandering in my yard at night during the silent spells. Yesterday morning I found scat that looks like it may be from a fox on my walking path. A motion sensor camera could produce some surprising and interesting photos.
