Read, Every Day

Read, every day, something no one else is reading.

Think, every day, something no one else is thinking.

Do, every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do.

It is bad for the mind to be always part of unanimity.

Boobquake

A Hoosier woman has started a facebook page called Boobquake in response to an offhand comment in her blog, blaghag.com, about a Muslim cleric who claims that immodestly dressed women cause earthquakes. She is encouraging women to show cleavage or dress otherwise immodestly on Monday.

I might wear low-slung hiphuggers just to make sure I show enough cleavage.

I have provided the link to her original blog comment and the Facebook page.

Nova Scotia Well Water Study

Tags: Life In Cape Breton
"The Atlantic Path is the largest cancer research project ever undertaken in Atlantic Canada. We collect lifestyle information, biological samples and physical measurements from men and women aged 35 to 69 who volunteer to take part in the landmark study into how genetics, environment and lifestyle contribute to the development of cancer. We also track participants’ health for 30 years through cancer registries, hospital records and other health-related databases.

“The information obtained through this study will provide an enormous bank of information which researchers will be able to draw upon to help identify the causes of cancer and, in turn, develop better detection, treatment and prevention methods,” says Dr. Louise Parker, principal investigator for The Atlantic Path.

The Atlantic Path is about the health of our children and grandchildren. "

Happy Easter!

Tags: Easter Weekend on Marble Mountain
This is one of the loveliest Easter mornings ever. Just as the sunrise service at the look-off was finishing, the sun rose over the far shore. Perfect!

The potluck was a huge success, there must have been 60 people. There was no shortage of food. There were a number of egg dishes such as quiches and stratas. There was fruit salad and breakfast meats. Toast and more. At the end, when all the leftovers were scraped from the plates, Lynn's crows got an Easter feast. Riley the black Lab got his share of sausages and Flyn & Lily each got a piece of leftover strata. Let all of God's creatures celebrate this day - by eating.

Last night we heard owls and the first of the spring peepers. We heard them again this morning.

How's the bunny connected to Easter? Egg-delivering rabbit's origins traced back to 13th century

Tags: Holiday
There's no story in the Bible about a long-eared, cotton-tailed creature known as the Easter Bunny. Neither is there a passage about young children painting eggs or hunting for baskets overflowing with scrumptious Easter goodies. And real rabbits certainly don't lay eggs.

So why are these traditions so ingrained in Easter Sunday? And what do they have to do with the resurrection of Jesus? Well, nothing.

Bunnies, eggs, Easter gifts and fluffy, yellow chicks in gardening hats all stem from pagan roots. They were incorporated into the celebration of Easter separately from the Christian tradition of honoring the day Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

According to University of Florida's Center for Children's Literature and Culture, the origin of the celebration — and the Easter bunny — can be traced back to 13th century, pre-Christian Germany, when people worshiped several gods and goddesses. The Teutonic deity Eostra was the goddess of spring and fertility, and feasts were held in her honor on the Vernal Equinox. Her symbol was the rabbit because of the animal’s high reproduction rate.

Paradise

Tags: Easter Weekend on Marble Mountain
We are having the most lovely Easter weekend imaginable. Sunny, warm, spring. This is a far cry from Easters for the last few years that were cold, icy, snowy sleety, too dangerous and miserable to go out.
There will be a sunrise service at the look-off at 6:30 a.m. that is open to the public. A brunch will follow in the hall for service attendees.

It's Time I Let You Know - I'm Out

Tags: Life
I'm out and I'm strait and I want the people around me to know. There, I've said it. I feel much better now, not having to keep that secret.

Ok, you are wondering what this is all about. Yesterday I found out that a family member is planning to "out" herself and I wonder why she feels this is necessary. It's as murky as mud to me. For the record, we've all know this about her for years, not that it matters much or changes how we feel about her. We all think she rocks!

I decided to announce my orientation, too, so I could understand how it feels. I have done it and I still don't understand it. What's the big deal with announcing it? Why should people around me care anyway? This is so confusing.
