A Good Omen

This is my horoscope for today. It's rather a good one, I think I'll keep it for a while. "This is a time for getting a little loose and wild with friends, going dancing, or doing something out of the ordinary that is stimulating and fun. You meet interesting new people and are more open to people who are quite different from yourself." Where is the dance this weekend? There's one in St. Peter's Monday evenings at 7 in the United Church hall. $5.00 We'll be there, will you?

St. George's Channel Hall will hold their annual Hog & Hen BBQ Day and Irish Pub Night tomorrow

Tags: Being Neighborly Entertainment News Food & Fun Local News Local Talent Music
St. George's Channel Hall will hold their annual Hog & Hen BBQ tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, August 7, followed by Irish Pub Night with Irish music and open mic. Great food will be accompanied by great Irish music and phenomenal local talent.

The bbq will take place from 12:00 noon until 6:00, then open mic from 7:00 to midnight, music all day, if it's the same as last year. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.)

It promises to be lots of fun for everyone and good craic, as the Irish say. There may be good beer from the Wolfville microbrewery again this year, I haven't heard anything about that this year.

We plan to arrive at 7 for Pub Night and Open Mic.  Come join us for a very good time!

Rob & Louise's Housewarming Party

Tags: Being Neighborly Entertainment News In Marble Mountain Food & Wine And Entertainment Local Talent Music
Well, that was a good time! The party commenced at 3:00, according to the invitation. We arrived at 5:00 to find the 6 or so musicians fully engaged and the folks all fed on hot dogs. The music greeted us as we got out of the car a few feet down the road. There were salads of varied kinds, chips, dips and marvelous chocolate cake. Deb handed out ice cream bars. Nothing beats a summer party on the deck, especially one with good musicians and singers.

We got to see friends and make some new ones. There were quite a few folks from the St. George's Channel area and Ross Point. Kit and I were the only ones from Marble Mountain, though Iris should count as she was born here, Gabi & Martin from BHI, and another "out of control" couple from Cleveland, as we were described as being much like them. I am surprised at the people who didn't show up, some from MM and Malagawatch who assured us they would be there. I wonder what else was happening last night that pulled people to other gatherings. It was their loss, everyone had a great time.

Thanks, Rob & Louise, for the great party!

Luminous Lint for Collectors and Connoisseurs of Fine Photography

Tags: Local Talent in Halifax
During my recent stint in Halifax I met a gentleman, Alan Griffiths, who had recently moved here and is pursuing his niche line of work in old photography. Check out his work, it's quite interesting. www.luminous-lint.com

As he says : “I‘ve created this website because I love photography, and feel we can work together to create a quality resource. If you can help out with a biography, some images, anecdotes or anything that helps us better put photography in context, send me an email. I hope you enjoy this resource as much as I enjoy bringing it all together.”

All the best, Alan Griffiths

Kunststricken - Yvonne's Art Knitting By Cape Breton Hands

Tags: Local Talent
See many pictures of Yvonne's beautiful work here. www.piczo.com/art-knitting

Art-Knitting (Kunststricken) is a special art of knitting. It requires patience and dexterity. The result is very rewarding. You see very delicate stitches on each of my products. It is knitted with very thin (1.5mm) needles, sometimes it involves more than 8 needles at a time. The patterns are of European designs. I have to follow very strictly the given pattern and every mistake will show. It is a time-consuming work of art.

The Bruce Guthro Concert Last Night in The Shannon Studio

Tags: Local Talent
Last night we attended the Bruce Guthro concert with George and Carolyn and we all loved it. The concert was a blast and we'd do it again in a heartbeat. As it states on his website "Troubadour and storyteller, Bruce's music gets to the heart of the matter, and his success can be attributed to his ability to connect with his audience." and he really does develop a rapport with his audience, especially here on Cape Breton where so many people know him personally. There were people in the audience who lived in his neighborhood and who went to school with him. I have to wonder if his repartee was more relaxed on home turf or if this is his standard performance everywhere. Here's the weblink to his site. www.bruceguthro.com

Bruce performed a couple of new pieces that were soulful and moving and he performed them very, very well, of course (goes without saying, yes?). Could we get him to perform at the Marble Mountain / Malagawatch Amphitheater when it opens later this year or next year? He'd have to return from Europe first, which I'm sure he'd be happy to do .

The Shannon Studio Theater is a small, intimate venue. The seats are comfortable and roomy. You can see of a picture of it here. www.phcivic.com It holds probably no more than 100 people, if that. It's one of the nicest places I've ever been in for a concert. The next few presentations in the Shannon Studio are Matt Anderson to Play Mar 15, 2008, David Myles to Perform May 24, 2008, Jill and Matthew Barber Sibling Tour Apr 12, 2008 - that would be a nice birthday present. Matt Anderson and David Myles get Bruce Guthro's endorsement, Jill Barber gets my endorsement. So get your tickets and join us there!

Bruce, when are you coming back? Denmark is a remarkable country full of remarkable people, it must be difficult to leave there ... like leaving Cape Breton.

I woke up with an awful weather headache yesterday and it finally started to wane at dinner time. I was afraid to move or tap my feet for fear it would return. My head was still feeling like it had been put through a wringer washer at the start of the concert but by the time an hour had gone by I was feeling great. It's the healing effect of music, for sure.
