A Good Omen

This is my horoscope for today. It's rather a good one, I think I'll keep it for a while. "This is a time for getting a little loose and wild with friends, going dancing, or doing something out of the ordinary that is stimulating and fun. You meet interesting new people and are more open to people who are quite different from yourself." Where is the dance this weekend? There's one in St. Peter's Monday evenings at 7 in the United Church hall. $5.00 We'll be there, will you?

St. George's Channel Hall will hold their annual Hog & Hen BBQ Day and Irish Pub Night tomorrow

Tags: Being Neighborly Entertainment News Food & Fun Local News Local Talent Music
St. George's Channel Hall will hold their annual Hog & Hen BBQ tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, August 7, followed by Irish Pub Night with Irish music and open mic. Great food will be accompanied by great Irish music and phenomenal local talent.

The bbq will take place from 12:00 noon until 6:00, then open mic from 7:00 to midnight, music all day, if it's the same as last year. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.)

It promises to be lots of fun for everyone and good craic, as the Irish say. There may be good beer from the Wolfville microbrewery again this year, I haven't heard anything about that this year.

We plan to arrive at 7 for Pub Night and Open Mic.  Come join us for a very good time!

Come Join Us For Mass In St. Joseph's Catholic Church Today At 1:00

Tags: Church History Holiday Life on Marble Mountain Local News
Only in the summer! Mass will be held in historic St. Joseph’s Catholic Church 1:00 today. Come join us.

You don't need to be cathlic and you don't need to be religious, just repectful once you're in there. Why would you attend? Because this is the old church, mass is only held in there in summer becuase there is no electricity in there so no lights and not heat for the winter months. It's a lovely, old church and it is on the historical register. Mass is mercifully short, which is good because those plank seats get very hard very quickly. If it makes your bum hurt, offer it up or bring a cushion.

Beer & Dogs Party at Rob & Louise's!

Tags: Being Neighborly Food & Entertainment Fun Life Local News
Rob has asked me to share this invitation with you. On Saturday, July 10th, Louise and Rob Woodley will be holding an informal ‘beer and dogs’ do at their new home. They would like very much if you would come and join them and celebrate their moving out of the garage and into a real house.

The party will begin at 3pm and will go until whenever it ends.

They will be supplying the beer and dogs. If you want to bring more beer, or stuff to go with dogs, then feel free – but it’s really not necessary just as long as you bring yourselves (and anyone else you think we know, but whose email address we don’t have!) Musicians – a chance for a jam might present itself. Stranger things have happened.

We’re looking forward to seeing Rob, meeting Louise and seeing them in their new home in West Bay Marshes. See you there!

It's a crisis! Alert!! Alert!! Intruders in the coop house!!!!!!!!!!!! Cluck-cluck-Cluck-cluck-Cluck-cluck-BWAAAK!

Tags: Entertainment News In Marble Mountain Humor sort of Life In General Local News Chickens
The hens are having a BIG crisis - this morning we introduced the black bantam peeps to the older hens, which are twice the size of the peeps.

The peeps are happily standing in their new digs but the older, bigger Golden Comet hens are aghast at the intruders in their house. One by one they trot up the ramp, peer in the door to their house, make very concerned noises, then trot back down to the run. They don't know what to do about the interlopers in their house.

An intrepid hen, one who no doubt must need to lay an egg, has found the courage to go in the house and into the laying box. She is in there making a ruckus and hasn't hunkered down yet to make her deposit. Poor things have no courage. This is also the first rooster they have ever seen.

The queen hen has been trotting around the run and up & down the ramp with her neck & tail feathers in a ruff but she has no idea what to do. Golden Comet chickens are known to be particularly docile. Bantams are know to be particularly tough. It's a stand-off!

Did I ever mention that my chickens are chicken? Everything frightens them. When they are scared they run for the safety of their house but not this time, that's where the scary things are.

What a fabulous time we all had at the St. George's Channel Hall with entertainment provided by Rob Woodley, Pat Lamey, Heather Richards, Tim Laborie and Adam Cook and friends.

The music started at 7:30, with a full house and then some, and played until 10:00 with only a break for sandwiches, sweets and tea at 8:30. It was a blast and I am sure that everyone had a great time.

What a great bunch of people they are at St. George's Channel! They managed to raise approximately $1,137.00 for our new hall fund. Thank you all for your wonderful and much appreciated support. You rock! We couldn't ask for better neighbors.

Historic Graveyard on Graveyard Cove

Tags: Life In General Local News News In Malagawatch News In Marble Mountain
Today a group of us went back to the pioneer graveyard to do a little further cleaning of the site. In all, it was Kit & myself, Tom & Jean, John & Pat, Dave D, Jim B, Hughie (he was there earlier in the day) and all our pooches. We attempted to burn the brush & branches that we had cleared & piled up off to the side of the graveyard last week but the strong wind kept blowing out the flames. Even the best pyromaniac among us, Eagle scout Kit, was unable to keep the flames going. We will keep at it, weekend after weekend, until eventually we get the work completed.

Jean thinks she may have located a few more graves in the direction of the water. If the clearing is enlarged, that should help us to identify the sites of any unlocated graves. (Thank you, Hughie, for all your work.)

It is likely that the original settlers were Presbyterian. Where would we find burial records? I did a web search for local historical burial records or graveyards but this one must have escaped the librarian.

The names engraved on the headstones are MacDonald, Campbell, MacKenzie and MacKay. Several folks have taken pix that I hope will be clear enough to put on the community's web page (there is a Flickr account). Does anyone know how to do headstone rubbings? Those would be nice to have, as the engravings on the headstones are gradually etching away.

Tidying The Old Pioneer Graveyard

Tags: Local News
This morning, five of us spent part of the morning clearing the trees & brush away from the old graves of the original settlers from Scotland. Hughie MacDonald went to work with his chainsaw and I piled the branches. Shortly thereafter, Kit arrived and put his boy scout skills to work igniting the pile with matches and birch bark. Eventually Tom & Jean McCann arrived and helped pile the brush.

I decided to declare this without consulting anyone because I saw plenty of trash, fresh and old, on my morning walk. It's an eyesore and soon it will be too chilly and icy to do this job. There's no time like the present to get a good job done. As always for outdoor events, this will be weather permitting.

Farm Market Growing Fast

Tags: Local News
New Glasgow operation has twice as many vendors in its second year. If the decibel level of the chatter in the New Glasgow Farmers Market is any indication, business is booming.

It’s true, market manager Alanna Murray said Saturday. Now in its second season, the market has about doubled the number of vendors and seen an increase in shoppers.

The market opened experimentally at Glasgow Square last summer with 15 to 20 vendors.

This year, when it opened in a new downtown location with a board of directors and Ms. Murray as manager, there were at least 27 vendors during regular Saturday morning hours of operation.

"It’s building. Everybody seems to be doing well," she said as she surveyed the busy floor of a former store on Provost Street.

More than 30 per cent of the vendors are farmers selling their fruit, vegetables, flowers, meat, eggs and wool. The remaining booths sell baked goods, fudge, jams and jellies, hand crafted items, soap, photographs and similar items.

"Our goal would be to double the number of growers," she said, adding that the market was established to offer a sales venue for local food producers and to promote the local food movement. In the friendly setting, vendors can talk to customers about their products and offer recipes and other advice, she said.

Most of the market’s producers run small farm operations with few resources, so it’s a good opportunity for them, she said.

"It’s huge encouragement for younger people to get into farming," she said.

The biggest challenge for any entrepreneur or new enterprise is marketing.

"It’s no good to do all the work if no one knows you’re here," she said.

Four farmers and an artisan serve on the volunteer board of directors. Because of the connection between good nutrition and good health, the group made a pitch to Pictou County Council to include the farmers market in a regional wellness centre that is yet to be constructed.

The proposal was well received, said Ms. Murray, noting that the current location may not be available next year if the space is rented to a year-round business. The market will stay open this fall until Oct. 31, and re-open in May.

There has been no opposition to the market. Its one weekend morning of operation likely doesn’t present a threat to big grocery chains or other food businesses, she said.

The market has also turned into the place to be on Saturday mornings in New Glasgow, with shoppers stopping over tea or coffee and homemade cookies to chat with friends.

Experienced farmers market shoppers know they have to get there early for the best selection, Ms. Murray said.

"It gets people out on Saturday mornings."

English Second Language Class In The Strait Area

Tags: Local News
Hello everyone,

I hope you all enjoyed your summer!

I am contacting everyone to see if they are interested in participating in an English Second Language class in the Strait Area.

Through the Teach Immigrants English (TIE) Program, we are hoping to be able to provide an English class to students within a driving distance of Port Hawkesbury.

If you think this class would be beneficial or if you know someone in the Inverness and Richmond area that may like to attend please contact me by responding to this email so I can add you to the list.

If I have enough students by the third week in September, we should be able to provide this service to you.

If you are a Permanent Resident this program would be free of charge, if you are here in Canada on a permit it may be possible for you to attend for a small fee for instruction.

Finally, if I do not have enough for a class, it is possible to provide individual language instruction in your home.

If you would like additional information on what the program is about, you can contact the instructor Patricia Cloutier at 902-387-2639 or 902-533-4252.

I hope to hear back from you soon

Best wishes,

Tanya

Fatal Accident In Cleveland Monday Evening, On Marble Mountain Road

Tags: Local News
From 101.5 The Hawk yesterday: RCMP have released the names of two victims killed in a car crash in Cleveland Monday night.

16 year old Nicole King was a student at SAERC in Port Hawkesbury, where grief councillors have been brought in to deal with the tragedy. She was killed when the car she was driving collided with a vehicle driven by 49 year old Edna Matthews who was also pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the car driven by King was taken to hospital and was released. The accident occurred around 9:30 last night on the County Line Rd near Highway 4.

Has Marble Mountain Road become possessed by an evil demon? Two fatal accidents on different parts of Marble Mountain Road within 5 days - what has happened to the road? I know the road is in desperate need of repair but, still, it should be fatal to the alignment of cars, not fatal to the people in them. This is too much for the communities to bear, both tragedies happening so close together. I am sure there are plenty of people who know or are related to the women in both accidents. I know some of them, myself. Everyone is feeling the heartache.

It is becoming apparent that young drivers need to be better informed about safe driving habits and better monitored. This is too much tragedy and likely it's also avoidable.

The last fatal traffic accident on Marble Mountain Road happened in 1915 in Malagawatch. A grandmother riding in a wagon was killed when the horse got spooked.
